Mouse not recognized because mouse is defective.
Cause:
Mouse is defective.
Solution:
Turn off the computer. Replace the mouse. Locate the mouse/serial port and plug the mouse cable into the back of the computer. Turn the computer on. Install the mouse driver and update the system file(s). Reboot the computer.
1) Save your work and exit all open applications.
2) Turn off the computer.
NOTE: If removing an old mouse is not required, skip to step 4) for installation steps.
3) Remove the old mouse:
a) Trace the mouse cable to the back of the computer. Note the location of the mouse cable connection.
b) If the mouse connects to a 9-pin or 24-pin serial port, unscrew any hold-down screws on this plug.
c) Grasp the mouse plug firmly and pull it straight out.
4) Install a new serial mouse:
a) Match the connector styles of the mouse and the computer port, noting the port used (e.g., COM1, COM2):
1] If the connector on the new mouse matches the port from which the old mouse was removed, use this port.
2] If the connector on the new mouse is a 6-pin PS/2-style connector, use the port labeled 'Mouse'.
3] If the connector on the new mouse matches the 9-pin serial connector, use this port.
4] If the mouse plug differs in size from the port on the back of the computer, obtain an adapter (e.g., 9-pin to 6-pin serial port adapter, or 9-pin to 25-pin serial adapter).
5] If no serial port is available, a bus-mouse is required (see 'Installing a bus-mouse').
b) Examine the shape and markings (e.g., notches or arrow) on the mouse plug and plug it into the socket on the back of the computer. (Secure any port screws or finger screws.)
CAUTION: Excessive force may damage the pins or connector.
c) Turn on the computer.
5) Install the software:
NOTE: If replacing a mouse with an identical one, the following steps are optional (however, an updated mouse driver may be available).
a) Locate the mouse installation diskette and instructions. Insert the diskette in the floppy drive.
b) Type one of the following commands at the MS-DOS prompt:
<drive>:INSTALL or <drive>:SETUP
NOTE: Consult the documentation that came with the mouse for the correct command for installing the mouse driver.
c) Follow the on-screen instructions for the installation program.
d) Respond 'Yes' when asked for permission to add information to Autoexec.bat and/or Config.sys. (This adds the correct driver statement(s) to the Autoexec.bat and Config.sys files, enabling the mouse when the computer is turned on.)
e) Press CTRL+ALT+DEL to reboot the computer. (This loads the driver added to Autoexec.bat or Config.sys into memory and enables the mouse to function.)
